I think this watch is perfect, it's this perfect picture of the attraction of the industrial aesthetic, this desire to literally merge with the products we are creating, because manufactured goods have the potential to be unchanging, in a sense eternal. It preserves an image, a quality of line, while we age and wrinkle and sag and grow distracted, industry remains as a sort of nobler cousin in our mind: the Empire State Building, the Bay Bridge, the Porsche 911, each carries a sort of iconic quality that seems so much more lasting than the whims of culture and taste. Here too, then, this watch carries a suggestion of retreating into the industrial, of defining ourselves by something that seems a little more unchanging than our own personalities and tastes.
...and it looks fricken' cool...
Natch--popular culture: Transformers, Metropolis, Knight Rider, D.A.R.Y.L., Terminator series, we are in love with our machines, we want to be joined with them...
SI.com has a nice collection of NHL goalies and their custom helmets. Interesting on several levels, the psychological isolation of a keeper, allowed to be ideosyncratic in this way, and second the way in which designers make use of the textures and surface of the space, coupled with the mental intensity of the area in which it is used, like ceremonial armor designed to intimidate enemies.
My favorite: Kari Lehtonen, from the Atlanta Thrashers, with his Kill Bill-themed design.
The Negroli Burgonet (Italian, 1400-1600 A.D.) from the Metroplitan Museum of Art.
Working on my Photoshop skills. It's funny, but making something playful proves to be a helpful way to pick up skills. Product of the video game generation, I suppose. I like the image cropping, and the depth of field work with color and layout, and the transparent text. Fits well with the song that inspired the title as well--Avett's "Colorshow". Source image is taken from a detail shot of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
