Perfect expression of industrial aesthetic
I think this watch is perfect, it's this perfect picture of the attraction of the industrial aesthetic, this desire to literally merge with the products we are creating, because manufactured goods have the potential to be unchanging, in a sense eternal. It preserves an image, a quality of line, while we age and wrinkle and sag and grow distracted, industry remains as a sort of nobler cousin in our mind: the Empire State Building, the Bay Bridge, the Porsche 911, each carries a sort of iconic quality that seems so much more lasting than the whims of culture and taste. Here too, then, this watch carries a suggestion of retreating into the industrial, of defining ourselves by something that seems a little more unchanging than our own personalities and tastes.
...and it looks fricken' cool...
Natch--popular culture: Transformers, Metropolis, Knight Rider, D.A.R.Y.L., Terminator series, we are in love with our machines, we want to be joined with them...
