Applied design -- hockey goalie helmets

SI.com has a nice collection of NHL goalies and their custom helmets.  Interesting on several levels, the psychological isolation of a keeper, allowed to be ideosyncratic in this way, and second the way in which designers make use of the textures and surface of the space, coupled with the mental intensity of the area in which it is used, like ceremonial armor designed to intimidate enemies.

It's hard to imagine that in 5000 years some archaeologist will uncover old footage of the pagan hockey games and marvel at the way the barbarians inscribed their myths on their helmets.

I can hear it now: "It must have been during an Ice Age, great warriors fighting epic battles on giant plains of ice. These artifacts must have been worn by a great chieftain, compared to these plebein standard helmets. Perhaps amulets of great and mystical power!"

And the thing is, psychologically, that is part of the dynamic.
